Library Displays

Lake Jackson Branch Library

Sticky Note Recommendations
The librarians at Lake Jackson Branch Library requested my assistance with a participatory display in which patrons recommend books to other patrons using sticky notes. As this display was created for the month of December, I chose to design a display that reflected the upcoming holidays, using mistletoe graphics as decoration.

The Book Was Better
This display was created in order to showcase books that had recently been made into movies, as well as promote our new young adult e-book collection. Using colored card stock, open faced books showcase the book cover alongside the movie poster, creating a physical presence for the online books. All of the e-books showcased are accompanied by a QR code leading the viewer directly to the Overdrive page in which they can check out the desired book.

Your Literary Horoscope
This fun display was designed to showcase a random assortment of good books that I felt had become lost in the sea of bookshelves. I chose twelve books across reading levels and genres in order to appeal to the widest audience, and wrote a miniature book talk for each, in the style of a horoscope. For example, Capricorn's horoscope reads: "Your head has been up in the clouds lately, your mind in fairy land… and now Fairyland needs your help. To vanquish the evil Marquess and restore peace to this strange land, you’re going to have to team up with a dragon and face many challenges. Good luck!" and suggests The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of her Own Making by Catherynne M. Valente. Each recommended book is labelled with a bookmark with the appropriate zodiac sign, and dangling paper fortune cookies complete the display.

When I found a wire display rack that had been left unused and unloved, I saw unlimited possibility. The basic display in the shape of a woman could easily be transformed with a few props into a variety of different displays. Using this basic frame, I have created displays for picture books about dogs, funny picture books, picture books about pirates in celebration of Talk Like a Pirate Day, early reader nonfiction books about sports, and fairy tales.
