Learner Analysis
Goal(s) & Objective(s)

This lesson is prepared for 1st students at a private K-12 school. The students are six and seven years old.  The 1st grade students have a fixed schedule for the library and have 30 minute classes and check out every Monday.

The 1st graders are doing a big unit on Thanksgiving and the first settlers. The first week of November is spent on the Native Americans, the second on the Pilgrims and their journey, and the third week on today’s Thanksgiving, culminating in a feast. This lesson was created after speaking to one of the 1st grade teachers, who shared that her main objective for the second week was for the students to understand some of the hardships the Pilgrims faced both on their journey and their first years here. A Venn diagram will allow the students to compare and contrast the items Pilgrims had with the items they have today. This will show the students some of the Pilgrims’ hardships, as well as hopefully foster gratitude in the students for the things they have.

The lesson plan allows for working together and guidance from the librarian and teacher, which will help with differentiated instruction. This lesson addresses the needed of visual, linguistic, kinesthetic, and interpersonal learners. Students will be able to hear and see the story, and students will be able to work hands-on and in groups for the activity.

Goals:
1.                  Students will understand some of the hardships the Pilgrims faced.
2.                  Students will be able to compare their own experiences to the experiences of the Pilgrims.

Objectives
1.      Students will be able to create a Venn diagram showing the similarities and differences between items the Pilgrims used and items used today with 80% accuracy.

State or National Standard(s)

Common Core Standards
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.1.7
Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g., explore a number of "how-to" books on a given topic and use them to write a sequence of instructions).

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.1.8
With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.1.5.a
Sort words into categories (e.g., colors, clothing) to gain a sense of the concepts the categories represent.

Standards for the 21st Century Learner
1.1.6 Read, view, and listen for information presented in any format (e.g., textual, visual, media, digital) in order to make inferences and gather meaning.
2.1.2 Organize knowledge so that it is useful
3.2.3 Demonstrate teamwork by working productively with others
2.3.1 Connect understanding to the real world
2.4.3 Recognize new knowledge and understanding

Addressing Learning Styles
Motivation

  • Grouping according to teacher suggestion.
  • Students will be allowed to choose whichever of the items they like to sort. The more advanced students can create themes for their Venn diagram, while struggling students can sort just whichever ones they know.
  • The items will have images as well as words, for the students who are still having difficulties reading.

Wear a stereotypical Pilgrim hat and then explain that actually, Pilgrims did not wear hats with buckles on them. Say that we’re going to learn lots more interesting things about Pilgrims today.

Activities
Materials

Librarian Activities:
  1. Librarian will greet students at the carpet line, introduce herself, and move the class into the library classroom.
  2. Librarian will have students sit on the carpet, and ask students what they know about the Pilgrims.
  3. Explain that today they will learn a little more about the Pilgrims, and then we will do a fun activity comparing the things Pilgrims used and the things we use today.
  4. Read “Thanksgiving on Plymouth Plantation” by Diane Stanley to the students and ask students comprehension questions while reading.
  5. Show students a previously created Venn diagram and explain the activity.
  6. Move the students to the tables according to predefined groups.
  7. Monitor student activity and assist as needed.
  8. Collect Venn diagrams at the end of the class.

Student Activities:
  1. While librarian is reading the story, students will sit quietly and pay attention.
  2. When librarian asks students to move to the tables, students will move to tables as they are called. Students waiting to be called will wait patiently on the carpet.
  3. Students will write their names on the paper, and if applicable, their theme.
  4. Students will work cooperatively to sort the images and choose which to glue onto their pre-created Venn diagram.

Classroom Teacher Activities:
  1. Classroom teacher will assist students as needed.

  • “Thanksgiving on Plymouth Plantation” by Diane Stanley
  • Example Venn Diagram
  • Gluesticks

For each class (3), prepare:
  • 1 Venn diagram per table (4)
  • 16 pre-cut items to sort (see attached) per table
  • 2 pre-cut turkey heads and 2 pre-cut turkey feathers per table

Evaluation/Assessment

Students should create Venn diagrams that are 80% accurate, with at least 2 images in each section of the diagram.
